SPD – what are they? I knew what they were when I just bought a set but didn’t know what it stood for.

What they are is a sort of spring-loaded bicycle pedal clip that if you have the right pair of shoes with a cleat on mean you can clip your feet to the pedals. What it means is your feet don’t slip off the pedals when you hit a bump!
They also mean that unless you have pracised the act of twisting your foot sideways to escape the clip that you are going to fall off the first time you come to a stop!
I’ve yet to try them in on the road, dear reader, but I’ll let you know how I get on.
