After 300+ miles on my bicycle from new it definitely requires a complete clean. It just so happened that our local bicycle shop had a sale on so I’ve invested in a bicycle stand for us and a chain cleaning kit from the Edinburgh Bicycle Coop.
Lorraine has promised to have a go too, so with some scribbled notes from a few websites on “how to clean your bicycle” I’ll see how we get on. Its been a while (about 15 years!) since I’ve had to do anything like this so I just hope everything still works at the end!!!
Also found this great repair site.

Wow – what a difference! Cleaned off the mucky chain and chain rings/rear gear/etc.
Scrubbed the wheels and tyres and frame.
Fixed rubbing rear break (my fault)
put it all back together and lubed the approrpriate parts.
It looks like new and the chain and sprockets are suitable glistening and tick round nicely.
Did the same with Lorraine’s as hers was muckier than mine!!!
Took probably over an hour for mine and then slight less for Lorraine’s (knew what I was doing by then!)
